When you think of Big Bear Lake, you might picture snow-covered slopes and winter sports. But swap the skis for golf clubs in the summer, and you’ll discover Bear Mountain Golf Course, a peaceful 9-hole alpine escape offering cool temps, wide fairways, and panoramic mountain views.
Last weekend, Karlye and I took full advantage of a clear mountain afternoon to play a round here, and it did not disappoint. From the laid-back atmosphere to the challenging par-3s, we found plenty to love about this scenic gem.

Mountain Air, Wide Fairways, and a Relaxed Pace
We teed off under crisp blue skies, with towering pines lining the edges of each hole. One thing we noticed right away: the generous fairways. Whether you’re a casual golfer or still perfecting your swing, this course gives you breathing room without sacrificing challenge.
The elevation, over 7,000 feet, makes your ball travel a bit farther, which made our club choices interesting, but fun to experiment with. Karlye nailed her drive on Hole 3, and I had a solid tempo going until I got a little too aggressive on the front nine.

A Highlight on Hole 5: The PW-Iron Shot
Hole 5 stood out as one of the more technical and rewarding par-3s on the course. About 112 yards from the tee, it’s visually open but demands precision due to the undulating green and subtle wind shifts through the trees.
I pulled out my PW-iron, lined up my shot, and made one of my better swings of the day. The ball launched clean, cut through the thin mountain air, and landed softly about 10 yards from the pin. Not bad!
But Bear Mountain’s greens are no joke. They’re slick in places, slope subtly, and punish hesitation. I missed the birdie putt just low, but managed a confident two-putt for par. It felt like a small win given the green’s complexity.
Hole 8: The Scenic Showstopper
Of course, the round’s most photogenic and nerve-wracking moment came on Hole 8, the signature water carry par-3. You tee off over a pond, aiming for a tucked green that feels both close and intimidating.
My tee shot had a bit more adrenaline than I intended, but it cleared the water and landed safely on the fringe. Karlye, calm as ever, piped her shot onto the green. Watching it sail through the alpine air and settle near the flag was the highlight of the day.

Grill, Laughs & Recaps at the Clubhouse
After wrapping up, we grabbed a table on the patio at the Clubhouse Grill, which overlooks that same water-guarded Hole 8. Burgers, cold drinks, and golden-hour views of the green made for the perfect post-round hangout. We replayed every shot especially Hole 5 and 8 like true weekend warriors.
Final Verdict: A Big Bear Golf Must
Bear Mountain Golf Course isn’t about perfection—it’s about the experience: mountain air, memorable holes, and a fun, forgiving layout with just the right amount of challenge. Whether you’re playing solo, with a group, or with your favorite golf buddy, this course delivers on all fronts.
